Overlord

So right now, the most anticipated game for me right now is Overlord (aside from H3, but im a fan boy, so its a given.)

Let me tell you, it looks fun, probably not $60 of fun, but close. The demo is available on XBL and I highly recomend it. For anyone that doesnt know what OVerlord is, imagine Pikmen, but awsome(in a delightfuly evil way). You are the overlord, a very peter jackson's sauron-eske big burly guy in armor with an axe. You summon and command little imps to go around chasing and beating up peaple, pillaging plundering and just generaly causing havoc. The goal is to return your tower to its former glory (a pesky bunch of heros seem to have pillaged it while it was under its former lords command) and take over the countryside, establish a dark domain, etc etc.

The left stick controls movement, and the rightstick, rather than controling the camera, sends out your minons in a horde. it takes a bit of getting used to to uise the LB to control the camera (basicly you can center it on yourself), but the right stick to control the horde is quite nice once you get used to it. the A button attacks, the right trigger sends your minons out one at a time, as opposed to the right stick sending them all, and the X button cast a magic, the demo doesnt go into this very well, only one spell, so I dont know how you will chose between several and use them.

The animations of the imps are very nicly done. While standing around, they run through several random actions, looking around, punching eachother, etc, so it gives it a more real quality, as they arent all doing the same thing at the same time, all the time. Several of the attacks made me giggle like a young overlord, tourturing his very first imp. For instance when attacking sheep, they chase them for a bit, then jump on their heads, making them fall over, and then the rest procced to beat it to death.

Upon death, the things that you kill release "life force" that allows you summon more little imps. (you are limmeted in the total number you can summon, but this increases as the game progresses) And, being the wonderful little devils they are, the imps will bring you the essence of what they killed, if they are close to it, along with any gold, or I asume any other Items of intrest they may drop.

Upon the death of more advanced enemies (in the demos case halflings,or as the pesants like to call them in their thick accents, Arflings) They some times drop thier armor or weapons, wich the imps pick up and use or put on. (items the imps pick up are not limited to weapons and clothing, for instance, you must have them destroy a feild of pumpkins and several of the imps make pumpkin helmets for themselves.)

The dialoge is simply stunning. I realy dont know how they did it. The cheese was overflowing, but somehow they didnt make it tiresome. It has just the right mix of cheesy villan, evil clichés, and witty remarks that had me laughing alot.

I downloaded the demo and I was impressed. I liked it. The whole sending the minions to do your evil biddings is cool and they can sacrifice themselves to give you health. I thought it was pretty good. The animations of the minions are good, the animation of the Overlord himself was weak. I expected more, he moves like a robot but then again the whole point is that you send your minions to do everything.

I liked it though. Good game.

Is it out yet over there? It came out Friday in PAL Land, as did Project Sylpheed, I bought the latter but am yet to play it as I'm currently playing The Darkness
