Again, more great stuff from Sony's Gamer's Day.
Heavenly Sword (one of my most anticipated PS3 games) got a new playable demo at the event.
Again, 1up has a great preview.
Definitely check out some of the videos of this game. Including the MoCap stuff. The guy that played Golem in LotR is playing the King, and he does a fantastic job. Not only that, but the results of the MoCap are incredible.

It's been a year -- checking in with the blade whirling redhead.
By Alice Liang 05/17/2007

It's been a year since we first got our hands on Heavenly Sword at last year's E3, with redheaded "Goddess of War" Nariko, blades a flurry, engaged in an arena battle. Since then, however, we have seen very little of the game, so we were excited to check the game out in its second playable demo version at a press event earlier this week.
The new demo feels largely similar to the one from last year. Starting off right after the segment shown on hit TV show Heroes recently, it features a short cut-scene (check out the videos tab above to see it), as well as a fight atop a pillar and some quick rope running, complete with timed button presses, that leads up to an arena portion, ending when a troop of enemy reinforcements charges onto the scene.
The Heavenly Sword's three forms and Nariko's accompanying battle stances, which she can switch between on the fly, are back with some added flare -- fiery sword sparks and other speed effect graphics have been added to give her whirling blades a more impressive feel. Speed stance is the quick close-quarters dual-wielding battle style she uses by default -- holding down L1 or R1 changes her stance to Ranged or Power. In Power stance, her swords transform into a large two-handed sword which deals a lot of damage but is slower to wield as a tradeoff. While in Ranged stance, Nariko whips around her dual chained scythe-like blades.
SCREENS: Click the image above to check out all Heavenly Sword screens.
Each stance has a specific combat style with its own associated combos and finishing attacks (Power stance has a downward stab, impaling the grounded body of an enemy), which allows for a lot of options when it comes to beating down the minions of King Botan (mo-cap performance by Andy Serkis). For more stylish combat, there is a three-tiered special attack based on a meter that fills as you beat on enemies. The first level of attack has Nariko grabbing the enemy and snapping his neck, while the third level has her swinging her opponent around in a circle with her chain weapon. To gain enough rage points to execute a third tier special attack, we had to play through nearly the entire demo before we could unleash it on one of the last soldier's standing.
Besides fighting with the Heavenly Sword, Nariko can also pick up items from the floor or defeated enemies and throw them at others. Nariko can even pick up a dead soldier and hurl it around like a body shield before throwing it. Using "aftertouch," players can manipulate the projectile path of thrown objects with Sixaxis motion controls, slowing down the camera speed for dramatic effect.
The battles are as flashy and dramatic as ever, with stunning graphics to boot, but this short and similar burst of gameplay demonstration leaves gameplay questions, like whether or not the final game will be mostly arena battles pieced together with cut-scenes, largely unanswered. But gathering from Sony's promises, it looks as though there may be more to Heavenly Sword than currently meets the eye, including weaponry such as crossbows and ancient bazookas as well as new unplayed gameplay forms. We'll know more in the upcoming months. |

Heavenly Sword Demo in 'Very Near Future'
Could it be as soon as E3?
By Patrick Klepek, 07/03/2007
As Ninja Theory polishes towards its Fall release date for Heavenly Sword, gamers are anxious for something more than editor impressions and gameplay videos. Instead, Ninja Theory's promising they'll be delivering a playable demo for their action adventure and it's coming in the "very near future."
Speaking on their newly launched IGN blog (via N4G), Ninja Theory teased what's coming:
"I can confirm that we are, of course, going to be releasing a demo for Heavenly Sword...and soon! This will be downloadable via the Playstation Network...so keep an eye out for this in the very near future...and i mean very near future!"
Hmm. Is Sony Computer Entertainment America planning to combat Microsoft's typically dominating E3 presence on Xbox Live? |

Ok, this game is WAY too short!
I got it on Saturday and I just beat it on Sunday night. It took me 3 games. I think I could've just beat it yesterday, but I stopped playing to play Warhawk with the GIs.
The game is pretty good though. Still hate the fact of the stupid sexy lack of jumping, but oh well...
The last boss is a bitch to kill just because of the fact that you can't see anything. But once you get the hang of his fireballs, he's cake.
So yeah. Good game. Way too short. I still have to get through the game on hell mode. I wonder what that will be like. It's challenging at times, but not too hard. I wonder if Hell mode is like almost impossible!
We'll see. |

yeah all of the reviews are around the 8s and mention that it's too short. But it doesn't bother me any. I'll probably play through it multiple times.
I want to make sure I unlock all the combos and extras.
Game is awesome though. I only had time to play it for a little while last night, I got to the first boss fight.
I love switching stances in the middle of combos though. It's so pretty to watch.
If anything, this game is a perfect stepping stone for another game from Ninja Theory. Short or not, it's definitely worth it. |

I -like- the idea of it being short. >_< I'm tired of games that I have to spend months and months playing. I don't have the attention span for it, and how often do you end up with not enough time to play all the games you'd like to because you still haven't beaten X game?
It's pretty and it looks like a lot of fun, and with it being shorter, I might actually end up with enough motivation to play it more than once- something I've never been able to do with a game before because they always take too long to go through and I'm tired of it by the time I get to the end. |
