The price dropped today at my store, I had the pleasure of printing up the new signs.

SEGA used to be alright with release dates for here, and we had a couple of titles you guys didn't get on the Dreamcast (Rez, Headhunter and Shenmue 2 are the main ones I think)
A friend of mine ended up importing Shenmue 2 for his DC, and then bought it for his XBox also. I wanna say Rez was one that we were looking forward to and were disappointed in never recieving.

Circuit City is also giving a free controller with purchase.

Then there's the 5 free Blu-Ray Movies

This is a great deal!

If you go to Target and sign up for their instore credit card, you get 10% off anything you purchase for that day.

So you could rack up on PS3 stuff adn save 10% on the total. Just make sure you can pay it off quickly, interest on the card is like 24%

OK so here's some new news.

Sony has stopped production of the 60G model.

"WHAT?" you say?
Don't worry about it.

If you look at the box of the new 80G model that has Motorstorm in it, it says "Limited Edition"

So what will probably happen is the 60G will sell out (Which will take several months since there's like 4Million in the channel), then they will stop shipping the "Limited Edition" and the 80G model will be available for $499.

That's what I'm hearing everywhere.

The 80G model is actually cheaper to produce than the 60G model since the removal of the Emotion Engine.

E3 2007: Sony Confirms PS3 Price Cut Only Temporary
Sony Europe spoils surprise, America says it's true.
By Patrick Klepek, 07/13/2007
Sony Computer Entertainment America announced Monday the price cut in America was official. Sort of. PlayStation 3 launched with $499 and $599 SKUs, SCEA removed the 20GB SKU in March, but now the $499 is back due to a price cut and the $599 is coming back with a copy of MotorStorm and 80GB of hard drive space. Confused? Today, it gets worse.

It all starts because of Sony's European branch. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President David Reeves told GamesIndustry.biz the $499 SKU will be phased out once the stock on shelves is gone. "All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July," he said.

Wait, maybe he misspoke. Maybe he didn't realize what America was doing. And maybe Kaz Hirai can clarify what's going on with Scandinavian TV show VG TV (as noticed by Next Gen). "[We do not] have a 2 SKU strategy in the US, we learned very quickly customers respond better to having one SKU than two. We dropped the price on the 60GB model, as you know that model is no longer in production, once it's no longer on store shelves it will just be the $600 SKU," said Hirai.

When two executives let things slip, there's a problem. So, is it true? SCEA confirmed to 1UP the phase out is happening this morning.

"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our hardware offerings in the North America at this time."

What the heck is going on? Good question.

I heard at the 80 was staying at the old retail price of the 60gb model ($599?)

Europe will still pay £425, but will seemingly get Motorstorm, Resistance and a second controller thrown in, so technically the consoles £300

In thoery thats a great offer, but for most its still alot to pay out in one go, hell I know people who want just the system for the time being to download games onto

Easy come...Easy go

A television interview with the global head of Sony Computer Entertainment settled the matter once and for all. Speaking to Norwegian game-news outlet VGTV, SCEI president and group CEO Kaz Hirai said in no uncertain terms that the 60GB PS3's days are numbered.

"From a hardware perspective, the $499 price adjustment we did for the 60GB version for the American market, we're no longer in production for that product," he said in an unedited on-camera interview. "Once that product is gone from the retailer shelves, then we're back to a $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two-price strategy in the US market. We found out very early on how consumers react to having just one SKU as opposed to two."

Scroll up 2 posts... I mentioned this already.

There's still 4 million PS3s in the channel. So there's plenty for the $499 price tag. Then, when there sold out, Sony will take out Motorstorm and price the 80G for $499.

All the quotes from Sony lead in this direction.

The latest one I saw said
Quote:

Senior Public Relations Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, Patrick Seybold was quoted as saying to the media personals: “The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.

This means that the just announced price cut is only temporary as the gamers would still be required to pay USD 599 for the only available PS3 console in the US market in the coming months.

See the bold... also known as, when the 60s are gone, the 80s will be $499.
It makes sense considering the 80G is cheaper to produce than the 60G.
