Take Tomb Raider, Give it gameplay like RE4, and cover like Gears and you have Uncharted.

I don't know much about this game, but I do know it looks amazing

Again, more 1up previews from Sony's Gamer's Day.

Hands-on with Naughty Dog's mysterious adventure.

We had seen so little of Naughty Dog's beautiful-looking Uncharted: Drake's Fortune that it was almost a shock to be able to actually sit down and play it. But at a Sony press event earlier this week, that's just what we did, taking control of everyman protagonist Nathan Drake as he ran, jumped, climbed and fought his way through an unbelievably lush island environment.

But first, we caught a tiny bit more story. It seems that Drake -- a purported descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake -- is on the trail of a vast treasure. He's accompanied by budding documentary filmmaker Elana Fisher, who quickly has cause to regret her decision to tag along on Drake's treasure-hunting expedition when their small plane is shot down over the jungle. Drake and Fisher are separated, and Drake parachutes down into an overgrown ruin in the middle of a dense rainforest. It's here that we take control.

The first thing we notice is the way Drake moves. With a few exceptions, the animations of this character are fluid and lifelike, with a staggering degree of realism. We notice a sense of weight to his movement and interaction with the environment: He drops a long way and collapses into a crouch; he fails to land a punch and is pulled off-balance by his wild swing. He also reacts emotionally to events around him. Under heavy fire, he's wide-eyed with fear; hanging from a ledge, he grimaces with the effort.

This variety of animation is the key to the realistic look of the game, because Drake is one multitalented guy: The game mixes platforming, exploration, gunplay, and hand-to-hand combat early and often. One segment has Drake leaping and climbing across a series of broken-down pillars to reach a high ledge. Once he gets to the top he needs to bust down a rotting metal gate to access the next area...where he immediately encounters a group of gun-toting pirates (not the parrot-sporting kind; these are modern-day pirates, brutal and well-equipped with serious weaponry). Drake can take cover behind any manmade object, blind-firing behind short walls, flattening himself next to doorways, even climbing taller walls and firing over the top.

Drake doesn't have an unlimited supply of ammo, though -- not even for his trusty pistol. And while he can pick up weapons from downed enemies (we saw an automatic rifle and a shotgun, as well as a few grenades lying around), he can often find himself in a situation that calls for close-quarters hand-to-hand combat. This is handled with an interesting combo system: Throw a punch and the action will slow down momentarily, accompanied by a slight, subtle camera focus shift. This is Drake's cue to follow up with another attack; if he gets the timing right it leads to a powerful combo, but if he misses the timing he also misses his target, throwing himself off-balance and opening him up to a counter from the enemy.

This subtle timing cue is indicative of the minimalist interface of the game. While the tiny heads-up display indicates remaining ammo, the screen shows no health bar or other extraneous information. Instead, Drake's health status is communicated in a much more subtle way: As he takes more damage, the screen begins to de-saturate, the lush greens fading into shades of brown. If Drake stays in harm's way the colors will eventually fade to a stark black and white image, indicating that he's in serious trouble -- scant moments away from death. If he can manage to find cover at this point, he can recover to full health, accompanied by a slow return of the rich jungle palette. If not, he's done and it's back to a checkpoint to try again.

From the exploration, as well as what we've seen of the story and dialogue, Naughty Dog is aiming for a clever, lighthearted adventure that unquestionably calls to mind Indiana Jones and the early 20th-century pulp serials that influenced that series. But the extensive gunplay may hint at a more serious side. We'll have to wait to see more to find out for sure.

One thing is certain: This is one gorgeous game -- one of those technological showpieces that simply could not have been done in previous hardware generations. If the final gameplay

You forgot about the part where you take out Lara Croft and her boobies. That makes the game significantly less appealing. ^_-

That can only be described as a good thing surely?

Anyhow I've seen a wee bit of coverage on this game, and while it looks pretty good, it still wouldnt sell me a PS3, I prolly would wait till its real cheap pre-owned to buy it if was 360 too

This game has peaked my interest. It's by Naughty Dog, the original developers of the earlier Crash Bandicoot titles... and the developers of best fighter ever to grace the 3DO! White Zombie fans know which game I'm talking about...
