Yup... it's official.

$400 40G PS3 w/ Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray
$500 80G PS3 w/ Motorstorm!

The differences are as follows.

40G will have 2 USB ports as opposed to 4 on the 80G
40G will not have memory card slots.
40G will not be backward compatible with PS2 games where the 80G has about 80% success with BC on PS2 games.
40G will be backward compatible with PS1 game.

Apparently, on the board, the 60G not only had the Emotion Engine CPU, but it had the PS2's GPU as well. The 80G loses the EE, but the GPU is still there. Hence the 75-80% BC. The 40G removes the GPU as well to further reduce costs.

I also thought that Motorstorm would be removed from the 80G package, seems that (thankfully) I was wrong about that!

My suggestion to those that are looking... I STILL think that the best thing to do right now is to grab the 60G if you can find one. There's something to be said about 99% BC with PS2 games upscaled to 1080p! However, the fact that the 80G already comes with Motorstorm... makes that package even more enticing!

Here's the news:

Sony announces 40GB PS3, 80GB $100 price cut for North America
Those in the US and Canada can rejoice that they too will be able to buy the 40GB model, along with receiving a price cut for the 80GB machine.

Although the new 40GB PlayStation 3 SKU has been announced for Europe, Japan, and Australia, Sony had so far refused to comment on whether North Americans would also be getting the new model.

However, today Sony Computer Entertainment America ended all the pesky 'rumours and speculation' by officially announcing that the new 40GB PlayStation 3--which is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles--will indeed be released in North America on November 2.

The 40GB model will come bundled with a Blu-ray movie of Spider-Man 3--the same deal as in Japan--and a suggested retail price of $399. It loses two of the USB ports featured on the bigger models, and also does not have a memory card holder.

For those in North America thinking about getting a PS3 this holiday season but worried about the impact on their wallets, the 80GB version has dropped $100 in price to $499, effective immediately. The 80GB console is not currently available in Europe.

SCEA president Jack Tretton commented, "We're pleased to offer the consumer a lower price point without sacrificing the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system available."
