So, using my Wii for the net and shtuff has been ok, but I'm finally ready to get a new PC on Friday, and I want to get the best deal that I can for $600 or less. I want Vista Premium, 2 GB RAM, Dual-Core processor, monitor umimportant, but I really dont do much online shopping and I seem to get the same farking search results everytime I search. Any of you PO's know of a good site that has good d3als? Lemme know.

My first suggestion... don't get vista!
Never buy a MS OS until AT EARLIEST the first service pack is released. |

If you must have Vista, you can probably scout around the major players websites. If you're comfortable with building your own box, you might want to take a wander around NewEgg and build it piecemeal, buying the OS from someone reputable. |

Probably the best advice I've ever seen Shino give. You can always buy an upgrade after the first service pack comes out, or hell just use XP for a while, its not gonna go away anytime soon.
Newegg is fantastic, If I buy hardware online thats usually where it comes from. They have excellent customer service, and if there are any problems with the part all you have to do is send it back and you'll get another. And they have just about everything. |

That is an amazing deal, the vid card is decent. I'm pretty sure its PCIE so you can drop some money on a new one in a couple of months if its not powerful enough for you. Considering I'd be able to deal with any problems I had with the PC, and I have copies of XP I could put on it, I'd jump on that. I'm not sure I could build that PC for that amount. |

Well the trick to purchasing a computer is what you are using the computer for.
If you are using a computer for basic stuff like word processing, web browsing, email, photos, etc. Then I would recommend an "Out of the box" PC from Dell, HP, or Gateway. They tend to get cheaper prices for their hardware because software companies pay them to put stuff on their boxes from the start, and in turn they tend to be cheaper to by then getting the parts piecemail. Also, you can simply clear the drive, and reinstall the OS/Drivers in a couple of hours and remove that spamware.
If you need a computer for something heavier like gaming, digital art, databases, etc. then you would be better off building a PC. The best way to do it frugally is to go to a place like Fry's Electonics and browse the various parts and components, and make a list. Once you get a list, then camp TigerDirect.com, NewEgg.com, Woot.com, etc. for specials on the parts you need and build the box that way. |
