Spicy candy is awesome.

MY favorite is Jalepeno Peanut Brittle.

Oooh, I've never had that! I wanna try it.

I think it was the Aztecs that would serve a cacao drink that had chile in it. Ooo, here's what wikipedia had to say:

"The Aztecs associated chocolate with Xochiquetzal, the goddess of fertility. In the New World, chocolate was consumed in a bitter and spicy drink called xocoatl, often seasoned with vanilla, chile pepper, and achiote, (which we know today as annatto). Xocoatl was believed to fight fatigue, a belief that is probably attributable to the theobromine content. Chocolate was an important luxury good throughout pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and cocoa beans were often used as currency. Other chocolate drinks combined it with such edibles as maize gruel (which acts as an emulsifier) and honey."

The first time I made it (as an experiment), I melted down baking chocolate, mixed in cayenne, and then poured it into a sheet and let it harden again. Then I broke it into pieces and used it as ice cream topping, and it was freakin' awesome! It was ice cream...but then spicy!

Dude, I need to try that! :D All I've ever had are commercial versions. I never thought about making it myself. XD

*EDIT*
Oh my gosh I just had an awesome idea!!! WASABI CHOCOLATE!!

....it could work. Or be absolutely horrible. But there's only one way to find out!

Uhh...I don't know if that would fly. I'm not very familiar with the stuff since I don't eat Asian food very often, but doesn't Wasabi have a horseradish-like flavor? So I would assume it wouldn't taste too great...but good luck if you do decide to venture into that territory...let me know how it turns out.

The reason I use cayenne powder is because it's reasonably spicy (and since it's powder it's easy to control how hot you make it) and because it doesn't have that strong of a taste, and what taste is does have is usually masked by the chocolate (I like the really bitter, high cocoa content stuff).

Last year for Christmas I made jars of Mexican style hot cocoa mix, complete with cayenne for a bit of spicyness (that some of my family didn't appreciate). Actually, I think I may have sent a few jars down to Atlanta with UP when she visited last...

You don't have to have it if you don't want. It should still be good though, if you felt so inclined.

I still have more of the hot chocolate mix left, I'm only one person! Anyways, I have had it recently and it's still as delicious as when I first tried it! YUmmm!

This thread is making me want to eat sour candy. I could go for some sour patch kids right now, or lemonheads, or, even though this is not sour, pop rocks!

Actually I'm like the hot chocolate king...I always have instant on hand and I also make my own. On especially cozy nights. ^_^

I love the stuff and just forget I have so much in different hiding places. hehehe

My newest quest is to try to procure Mexican chocolate disks, Mexican sugar, and masa to make REAL Mexican hot chocolate...Dia De Los Muertos style...
