This is a movie adaptation of a Stephen King novel.
I had originally gone into it with the assumption that it was like the old movie The Fog where the mist/fog will get you...I was only partially right.
I would preface this with the fact that I really am not much of a fan of Stephen King...I've tried reading his books, but I just can't get into them...too wordy.
The first thing that struck me during this film was the dialog...it just didn't work...it didn't feel natural. A lot of the characters were so stereotypical that it ran almost like a live play with how they would often have their solitary moments, speaking to the masses.
If you like films that are more of a study of human nature and social behavior of a large group during a crisis, then you'll enjoy the movie. It just has a sci-fi spin going on in the background. A hint of H.P. Lovecraft. |

I hadn't read the novel. I went to see the movie with a bunch of my friends because they read t he novel and loved it.
We were all disappointed.
My first criticism: you shouldn't have been able to see the creatures at all. It would have added to the suspense factor.
Second: Don't do movies based on Stephen King Novels. They just tend to not be good. |

I hate to say it but, it was the first movie I've been to in a really long time where I've gotten bored.
The dialogue in the very beginning set me off on a bad track in how contrived and wordy it was. I just can't tell if it was due to the script, or bad acting...the movie didn't exactly have any megastars. |

Now i know that there are short stories and books in that list as well, but a lot of that list are TV productions and the like. Aside form those three, i maybe found 1 or two more i enjoyed. Aside from that, most of em I really don't care for or have never seen/heard of. |

I would like to counter with Needful Things, Cat's Eye (I love this movie because it's so bad), and Daywalkers? (the one with the bad shape-shifters)
Where does IT fall in all of this? Great story, bad ending. |

now back to topic with SPOILERS: i enjoyed the movie but there were problems...
1. how long they waited after the drive was too short. are they saying small town people are suicidal by nature?
2. Monsters. they have cool tentacles or the poison/silk of the arthropods was great but the faces look like the usual steven king crap from him snorting too much coke while writing. i did enjoy the Lovecraftian "it came from out of space and time" aspects that also felt like i was in Metroid as well but those were an ugly even nature would kill for aesthetic reasons.
3. humans. i know they have nuts everywhere but why was the bible bitch NOT shot sooner? this section is best left further at a George Carlinism: "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." Also added to that is human "society" is nothing without electricity. good luck sheep!
4. Sound. um unless the density of that mist is constantly shifting i think i can hear a TANK rolling along while sitting inside an SUV. frankly it was a LALALA!Physics LA! moment. it may be fiction but older b movies were better.
now all this may come off as hatred of the film but i did like it. thought it was worth using my free passes to go see it though fawkes, as she said b4, was BORED and hurt by it (i jumped and split her lip...) |

I see your Needful Things, Cat's Eye, and Daywalkers and raise you The Dead Zone (series and movie with Chris Friggin Walken), and Carrie.
Though to be fair Stephen King has pretty much admitted that he'll sign his name to anything because really if the movie sucks, you can always go back to the original source material and still enjoy it. Though I must say The Dark Tower comics have been pretty damned amazing so far.
Anyway, on topic: Overall, I liked The Mist. No I didn't read the book, and even if I did I've never been one of those people to cry bloody murder if the book was different. The Punisher 2004 for example changed the Punisher's origin almost completely but I still enjoyed it for what it was. I enjoyed The Mist, maybe because I didn't really expect too much out of it and I wonder if we as a society are just expecting way too much. Obviously not gonna win one for the academy, sure had it's share of problems but I thought it was worth watching and I left satisfied and entertained. |
