I only upgraded one movie so far from DVD to Blu-Ray and that was The Last Samurai. Todd and I both LOVE that movie, so it was worth the cash to get it so pretty.

Everyone has their movies that they want in the best format possible. With Warner moving to Blu-Ray... we're going to see LOTR in HD on Blu-ray only from what I hear later this year.

I'll probably buy those. Those epic battles in HD. Yeah... sign me up.

If The Star Wars movies came out on Blu-ray, I'd jump on those too.

Not many others in my collection I would upgrade though I don't think.

Maybe the Pixar films since those have an INCREDIBLE difference.

Well I don't plan on "upgrading" to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. If they stop making regular DVD discs I'll have to DL them and burn them myself. And I believe that will become a serious consideration for others too. It's not that hard to do. I already have Blu-Ray versions on DVD now.

I don't like being "forced to conform".

Weren't you "Forced to Conform" when companies decided to stop making VHS and started making DVD only?

Not really because the VHS tape had already run its course and the DVD was clearly an upgrade. And the transition was more gradual...not going from a small selection of the "upgrade" to a full selection within 6 months.

I agree with Razer, and I think companies are trying to forcibly change consumer behavior, which I hope blows up in their faces. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon either...I'm fine with the DVD as it is.

Isn't it kind of odd that VHS only became the main staple of video entertainment int 1990 when Betamax officially failed then only 3 years later DVD's started coming out and shut down VHS by 2006?

Now in 2009 Most movies will be Blu-Ray only. So if you follow the pattern DVD will last for about another 7 years. Blu-Ray will dominate the market for 3 years before its new competition shows up then they will work hand and hand for 7 years then the new will outpace the old.

It also worked for 8-tracks to cassette to CD to eventually MP3.

I think it's called "Change" and the only reason Razer doesn't like it is because Nintendo doesn't have a blu-ray disc player yet and probably wants the alledged Wii 2.0 (With DVD compatibility) to not be outlived so early.

But when the DVD first came out nobody was buying it. VHS was still strong for several years after DVDs were introduced.

I honestly think that after this whole HD Format war is over, digital distribution will sweep in like a hawk and finish off whoever is left standing. I believe DD will be the new wave. It's not a matter of if, but when digital distribution will take over every facet of entertainment. You've already seen the beginnings of it with Itunes and Napster, STEAM game downloads, Netflix Online Movies, etc.

Now on a counterpoint I will be the first person to argue that I love the physical media and packaging that come with a purchase, but lately I've been leaning more and more towards DD as a means of ease and accessibility. Someday maybe we'll be able to skip the middle man and my money can directly support upstart bands or game developers with my purchases.

With the increasing amount of cheap bandwidth available, uncompressed digital format becomes more and more viable.

The problem is that storage becomes a bit of an issue since a DVD collection can easily eat up a terabyte (approx 216 DVD format, 70 for Blu-Ray). For people who are somewhat computer savvy that isn't a big deal since you can just add more drives to your computer, but for the common rabble that is a pain in the ass.

Granted you can just burn them onto DVD anyway, but that defeats the purpose of the digital download =D.

Actually... I pretty much NEVER got into the VHS format. It was never really that popular from what I saw. Only a select set of movies came out for consumer purchase b/c the tapes were too damn expensive. Now... everything comes out on DVD.

I'm with you on the physical media. But digital distribution I think is being held up by bandwidth. The bandwidth for the common consumer is not good enough for digital distribution to take off. Not to mention it basically requires people to have internet and there is still a large percentage of people out there that don't.

I think that Disc media is going to be around for a while. But as I said earlier, I don't see DVD going anywhere. Which isn't a bad thing really. People will have a choice. If you feel you need a movie in HD, you have that option.

You know M$ jumped in on the whole thing to make sure thats what happens while they work on their digital distribution in the backround getting the kinks out so that when both formats fail they can be looked at as saviors. I mean look at all the stuff you can get on the xbox live market place. You can even download football games that were shown on it. Sure DD is limited to 720p at the moment but give it time and we'll have 1080p downloads.

OK ... more rumors...

Paramount has an out clause in their $150M contract with Toshiba... will they use it though?

But there's more. Get this: The Financial Times of London is now reporting that Paramount DOES indeed have an out clause in their contract with the HD-DVD camp - one that would allow them to switch sides in the event that Warner were to abandon HD-DVD. Now that this has occurred, the FT says that the studio intends to exercise that option, meaning that Paramount is about to go Blu-ray only as well. It's unknown whether DreamWorks has a similar clause, but it seems unlikely that they wouldn't. Keep in mind, we have yet to confirm this officially with either studio. But if it's true, this would leave Universal the sole remaining major studio supporter of HD-DVD. On that note, when Universal reps were asked today by the Wall Street Journal about their high-def format plans in the wake of Warner's decision, they had no comment (note that in the same WSJ piece, a Paramount spokesperson yesterday said the studio still planned to support HD-DVD). Our guess is that if the FT report IS accurate, you'll see some kind of official statement from Paramount imminently - possibly as early as tomorrow. We'd also guess that if this does pan out, there's a better than outside chance Universal could quickly announce Blu-ray support too. We'll see.

Bandwidth is getting cheaper by the day. I've seen guaranteed download rates of 1.5 mbs/sec (DS/1 rate) and burst speeds upto 15 mbs/sec on standard DSL/Cable. In about a year or two, we will have download rates that make pulling DVDs easy.

The bottleneck on on-line DVD distribution isn't on the consumer side, but with the distributor side. Downstream bandwidth is cheap, but upstream gets expensive in a hurry! A new DVD release online could easily DDOS a distributor.

That is actually the reason why torrents are so popular since it eases the burden of upstream on the distributor. WoW has been using that method for their patches with great success.
