I've been thinking a lot about what I want to do after I leave Athens with my pretty little paper. I've long desired to teach, and I've long planned to live abroad and travel. Of all the places I wish to live, Japan towers with other places at the top of the list. France and Ireland, the other contenders, have much stricter regulations for staying in the country long-term, though.
Anyway, I've been doing quite a bit of research recently, and plan to do a lot more over the next 18-24 months, and hopefully after that I'll have a decent idea of whether I'm truly up to everything the trip would require. |

Japan eats up English speaking teachers. Advice: find a social network of English speakers living in japan to help you wiegh your decision and get insight into the legal and social aspects of it. |

I have a couple friends who are doing this right now. ^^ If you want, I can try to put you into contact with them and you can hear about what they've had to deal with and all that.
My one friend has done it for two or three years now, so he'd have information on what you have to deal with culturally. The other one's been in Japan for a month or two, so she'd probably have more up-to-date information about what you have to go through -now- to get there. |

Yeah. I've seen both the large language schools that recruit from the US, as well as the JET program that the government.
I think I'd be more interested in doing the JET program if I could get accepted, simply because I think I'd prefer getting a foot in the door to teach at a public/private high school. That would depend, of course, on the differences that exist between high school teaching and language school teaching.

I would appreciate and enjoy being able to speak with your friends teaching there, if they don't terribly mind talking to me about their professional and personal experiences there. Do you know whether they are working at high schools vs language schools? If not I could certainly ask them myself if/when I get in touch. |

*thinks* I think they're working at regular schools. Serina is I believe dealing with Kindergartners, and Chris deals with all levels. I'll beep 'em both and see if they don't mind chatting with you about it. I know Chris keeps a blog about it, so he has -lots- he can share. |

Wonderful! I appreciate the help. I might've even passed by it once in the frenzied reading and researching I started earlier in the week. |
