Fuel wastes created by nuclear reactors are around 3 cubic meters for a larger reactor (those that produce well over 1 gigawatt) and less for those that are smaller.
ITER or Internation Thermonuclear (fusion) Experimental Reactor is supposed to go online in 2016 and make 500mW for at least 400 seconds and lead the way for its predecessor the DEMO. DEMO is excepted to maintain a constant 2gW power output.
For reference the largest single reactor in the world is in France and outputs 1,455mW. The entire power output of the states of Vermont and Rhode Island is slightly under 1,650mW. Also Mitsubishi have plans to build 2 1.7gW reactors in Texas for Texas Utilities assuming the project gets approved by the NRC. | do you mean Mega Watts (MW) or miliWatts (mW) and gigawatts (GW)? Y'all all know I am NUKE NUKE NUKE NUKE! Bring on the NUKES! just neew to slap a few governors to allow us to actually TRANSPORT our waste to the Yucca Mtn site we set aside. this NIMBY shit needs to quit and we also need to use the coal we do have on hand more till the nukes open. I work on making and testing systems for power plants and soot/ash blowers so i kinda got some insight as does Feign who made stuff for France's nuke power industry. trust me in that boilers are boilers no matter our fuel. LETS GET TO IT! FOR SCIENCE! |

Nearly the entire state of Tennessee is powered by hydroelectric dams. Of course the Tennessee river winds through the entire state and they use lots of small dams so the resevoir doesn't flood too much of the environment. And they also have "feeder streams" which parallell the river so the dams don't interfere with any migratory patterns. A few years ago when California was having rolling blackouts Tennessee sold them nearly a quarter of their power requirements because they had that much of a surplus. So, if done correctly and you have the means, hydro is defenately the way to go. However, if you're in an area where there's no large rivers, no geothermal vents, and not a lot of wind, you gotta' go nuclear! |

rivers dry, winds shift, crust shifts off the hot spot. Nukes run w/o these problems and if it is a breeder reactor, makes its own fuel from its waste |

Now, it's been a while since I took Earth Science (so I may be a but rusty), but I'm pretty sure that those things take a very long time to happen. Like, "not really in our lifetime" long. |

Yes they are all stable enough to be used for a loooong time. Renewable really are the best option right now. the only problem is not everyone has access to these systems as they are very location dependent.
But back on topic. Right now all we currently have is nuclear fission reactors, they are highly inefficient and their wast is radioactive for around 150,000 years I believe. Basically I think these reactors are bull shit and it is highly irresponsible to build them unless its a last resort.
Now there is a prototype Fusion reactor going up in France, and if they can get that working to a point that is safe we could basically have free global energy by 2100 or so. Plus the half life on the waste is only like 150 years or something, thats roughly 1/1000th of the time of a fission reactor.
(I could probably find the article I read if u would like to use it as a reference)
So if it were me my main argument would be that fusion reactors are the true future of energy....because they are |

So you'd rather put 8.4+ million tones of CO2 + other pollutants in our air instead of putting 800 cubic feet back in the ground? And that 800 cubic feet could be further reduced to 24 cubic feet if we reprocessed the fuel.
Uranium came from the ground, it can go back there. Well at least go back in sealed containers.
But yes Fusion is the future. ITER is supposed to go online in 2016. It's not an issue of getting fusion power to be safe. It's already safe, your taking two hydrogen atoms and combining them into one helium atom. It's a matter of efficiency, to date there's been two instances where a fusion reactor has has made more power than it took to maintain the reaction but only for a few seconds. Also the helium byproduct of fusion is not radioactive, therefore not waste essentially. |

Also, given the fact that petroleum supplies have been reappearing in some old deposits we declared dead, does that not define THAT as renewable? |

So THAT'S what Giuliani did with all the homeless in Manhattan. No but seriously nuclear reactors all the way.

Oil is renewable, we just need to sink tons and tons of carbon in the earth and let it sit for a few million years and BAM more oil |
