You can just go online and read the entire thing for free. I just thought that I would mention that this was made into an actual book.

Hmm...I should come up with a ridiculous idea that someone would inevitably want to turn into a book. I mean, how hard could it be nowadays?

"Things I hate", an alternative guide to what to hate, based on the general cynicism and humors of Ming (the merciless).

piggybacking on what SJ said about a stereotype only affecting you if you let it, lets look a bit deeper.

Why don't people like to be stereotyped? The answer is pretty simple. We want to be individuals, and when you're lumped in with a group of people based on something as trivial as skin tone, it takes some of your individualism away from you. You don't feel like that snowflake anymore. I feel sometimes that some people feel the need to be an individual so strongly that they are willing to completely ostracize themselves so they can hold onto their individualism in their minds. This (once again IMHO) doesn't seem very healthy. (when taken to this extreme, initially being offended is only natural, once you've reclaimed your individualism as your own then the stereotype that offended no longer affects you or your self esteem.)

So I guess the point I'm trying to make is, no matter what stereotype you fall into, understand that people can put a thousand stereotypes onto you, but you'll never be the average joe/average jane that you're afraid these stereotypes will push you into. You're a unique, one-of-a-kind snowflake, and you always will be. Smile

In all seriousness though, stereotypes are not always a bad thing. I know that there is some argument as to why, I just don't remember what it is and don't feel like thinking about it right now. They're only bad when people take them too seriously. They're also not only based on skin color. For example, "Geek" is a stereotype that I'm sure a lot of us here would tend to associate with...and coincidentally not have a problem with. But also not consider themselves "Geeks" solely for the purpose of being different, which I agree with you is not healthy behavior.

True, we tend to accept stereotypes when it groups us with our friends, or usually when it's positive.
