If you ever wonder if the holocaust was real, I tell you now, it was. What you will see here may disturb you. If you are offended by this type of material please leave this thread immediately. However, for those of you who know little of the autrocities committed by some of the worst examples of human kind, I hope you can take something meaningful away from this.
I'm not going to post anything terribly graphic but here are a few pictures of Akila and I at the saddest place on earth. What was it like? Imagine the very opposite of Disneyland.
Here's one of Akila and I at the main gate where prisoners were brought by the thousands.
This is just a small sample of the vast amounts of barbed wire and electric fences that lined the compound.
This is the East Gate. Not much to say, just a good picture of the bleak surroundings the prisoners here had to look forward to every day.
This is the gate leading from the main camp to the crematorium.
This is the original crematorium. It had two ovens capable of burning two bodies each. I found it somewhat disturbing to be there, but that was nothing compared to what was to come.
This is the gas chamber. The prisoners were lead here and told to strip naked so they could go in the "shower" then they were shoved into this room and gassed. It was very unnerving to stand in there.
This is the "new" crematorium built after the old one could no longer keep up with the amount of dead. There were four ovens capable of burning two bodies each. Often victims were brought in an hung from the rafters directly in front of the ovens.
I don't want to take up too much room with the pictures or offend anyone too much but outside the main crematorium was the area where they buried the ashes and a "pistol range" were prisoners were shot by a firing squad. There were also the rooms where people were experimented on and tortured.
All in all it was a very sad and gruesome place where the worst of human kind is on display for all to see, and hopefully learn a lesson from. |

I went there in the Spring of '07. I know exactly what you're talking about.
The shooting "gallery" was one of the worst places for me. As were all the cells they lived in. Not very many people were there that day and it made it even more frightening. Is the sculpture of the bodies on the barbed wire fence still up? |

Yep. It's still there. I don't know if they had it when you were there but in the maintenance building there is a museum now and there are a ton of photos and "artifacts" from when the camp was functional. There is one picture that has burned it's self into my mind of a man who was forced to "escape" so that they could test the electric barbed wire. It was horrible to see a man being cut up and electricuted while the people (if you can call them that) who forced him to do it are standing by laughing. The look of sheer terror, fear, and pain on his face will never leave me. |

Have you got more pics uploaded elsewhere as I find this sort of thing fascinating (also have an obsession with Chernobyl)?
but pictures cannot capture what these places feel like, and its somewhere I'd love to go (if you could use the word "love" for something related to an event like that) to experience the atmosphere for myself, but I know Chixie wouldn't be up for it... |
