Yeah...tell that to 7th century Japan. Or the Sikhs. Or Vietnamese Buddhists (one of the many branches of buddhism that practices vegetarianism or veganism). A good illustration of my point is the Tibetan Buddhist culture, whose precepts are essentially vegan but because of where they live, consuming animal products is a necessity.
So yes, it was a poor example because natural veganism (being vegan without the amenities of the modern world) is entirely dependent on the part of the world that you live in and the quality of vegetable agriculture. Alaskan veggie agriculture of course being very low, so surviving in the Alaskan wilderness requires the consumption of animals. |

No it really wasn't I was speaking broadly about most of the world. Obviously there are plants which can sustain you that's why a modern vegetarian diet is doable.
what is one of the primary sources of protein in vegetarians? Soybeans.
Where were soybeans domesticated? East Asia.
Where are all those cultures you cited? East Asia
You tried to argue my point against me that basically it depends on your local vegetable resources. And most developing cultures did not have the benefit of high protein vegetables. If your local ecology supports it that's great. I would estimate at least 80% of the historic population was not this lucky.
Anyway I have no problem with vegetarians, I not trying to convert you back to meat. I am looking at this as a paleoanthropologist in the development hominids to modern Homo sapiens. And then the reliance on agriculture and a mostly vegetarian diet leading to general protein deficiencies in most not all historic societies.
Since I wasn't really looking for a fight from the start I'm tapping out |

But should we respect the rights of roses and blackberry bushes? They are just full of pricks. |
