I do agree with Godwyn that sometimes the "geeky" things that a small portion of society does still get an uneasy reaction from those who are "not in the know." However, that applies to nearly anything that "non-geeks" find mysterious.
I don't know how many people have whispered "does she worship the devil?" when looking at my very plain but very pretty pentacle necklace.
People seem to always assume something they don't understand. I have a feeling they are afraid of us because we possess something they don't. We have knowledge that they don't. I would rather share that knowledge in the hopes that there would be no snickering or whispering or whatever.
And no matter how "accessible" they make these games, there will always be mystery and elements that only "geeks" will be able to offer. |

You think normal people are afraid of table tops, "satanism", and alternative lifestyles? People can simply avoid them for the most part. Computers and technology seem to inspire the most dread and fear out of regular folk.
I've seen users treat their computer almost like a religious entity. Very careful, precise actions which make ZERO logical sense. Hell, the concept of the internet is almost like mythical entity with even people in the highest echelons of power that have no remote grasp of how it works.
Also, I prefer GURPS and Hero System for making characters. Very very open ended and simple to play once the character is made. |

I think people are just wondering which of their many faces they should don when dealing with someone else. If they support what your necklace represents they put on the happy face. If not they put on their frowny face. It's all just levels of acceptance and control. |
