I'm sure I spelled that wrong.
So I'm on my way to Afghanistan when my plane has to land because fo bad weather. So where do we land? Kazakhstan! Take that Doot! (yes, I'm still jealous. Doot get's to go to Maccu Pichu and I get to go to Kazakhstan, it's just not right.)
Apparently they have an airport. Unfortunately I didn't get to get off of the plane and take any pictures, but rest assured, it looks just like the movie! The "airport", which was cleverly disguised as a flat peice of ground with lines on it, was surrounded by a two meter tall wall lined with razor wire. On the other side of the wall were slums as far as the eye could see. A sight which was made even more depressing by the fact that it's winter and the few trees that were standing were as bare as the muddy streets in the adjacent village.
Right now I'm in neighboring Kyrgystan which is awsome! The weather's a little warmer, (ie above freezing), and the locals are really nice. It's like the biggest former Soviet thrift store. All Soviet items must go, dirt cheap! You can get all kinds of old U.S.S.R. crap here.
Anywho, I'll try to get some pictures uploaded when I get to Afghanistan. The connection here sucks. It took almost four minutes just to load the PO page and I've lost connectivity twice so uploading a picture is kind of a no-go at this time. But rest assured, pictures are coming for make benefit gloirous nation of Miniopia! |

Theres supposed to be some beautiful scenery (and wonderful people) in that region, but all I've seen of it was in Long Way Round |

On a side note I'm jealous of anyone gets to travel. I've always wanted to do it but it's never been financially feasible. |

Unfortunately I'm here on business. Not really the way I wanted to travel nor to the places that were high on my to-do list.
However, I must say that if you are looking for a little known travel destination with outstanding scenery, friendly locals with a colorful culture, and a good exchange rate, look no further than Kyrgyzstan! Riva is absoultely right about the scenery. I've been here for almost a week now and, even though I can't leave the base here, the scenery is stunning. I'm in a valley at the norther base of the hymalayas and the view is spectacular. Mind you, it's winter here too so all the trees are bare and everything that's not white from snow is brown, but I've seen pictures of spring and summer times here and it's absolutey beautiful!
Too bad I can't stay and visit. |

Well, safe travels friend. I don't think you'll have to worry about getting trapped in a gift shop though, like I did in Cozumel. Weird experience.

Oh yes, I've seen the best dirt and rocks in the world! Just once I want to be deployed somewhere nice, like the Bahamas!
I can't complain much, I have been living in Germany for the last two years and that's been awesome.
UPDATE:
I finally left Kyrgyzstan and am now in Northern Afghanistan. So far I've seen seven trees so that's promising! |
