The whole concept that language was designed to be sexist boggles my mind. People actually believe it? The English language comes from several root languages, including Latin, French, and various others including Saxon, Norse, and more. In Spanish and Greek, and Italian the three closest things to latin that are still used, the word man is completely different. Hombre (Spanish) is man, and uomo is man in Italian. The fact is that an, is and er are common letter combinations, and the fact that they happen to fall after a m or a h is coincedence at best. It seems paranoid and foolish to believe that language was somehow designed (especially since it slowly evolved) to insult a specific group, in this case women. Especially if you look at the old English, where ielde means men, and monn and wer mean man. It is feisable that language is designed as sexist, it would take to long and would have to have been constant for hundreds of years. Especially since that wa a time when women were pushed to the side of society alot (offhand), and therefore there was no need nor desire to further insult them. (I am not sexist, I just like language)

They just need something else to bitch about. That's the only reason they try to change language and claim that its sexist. Honestly, go do something more productive instead of pissing on men...

Anyway, I agree with you, Ain. The idea that language is INTENTIONALLY sexist (and, as far as I can tell, nothing can be sexist if there's no intention to BE sexist) is ridiculous. And I agree with Ming that it seems to be more an issue of them wanting something else to complain about. But, I have to give them the fact that they were oppressed at one time, and I honor their desire to maintain their now achieved status. However, I think that there are more productive ways to further their cause than to keep raising protest against such trivial things as language.

That's just sad. No offense to any feminists out there or anything. But seriously, don't you have anything better to crusade against than something that has been established for HOW MANY years? I think you're fighting a losing battle here...
