Meh. That just about says it all, right there. Meh. It has some really cool graphics and a couple of good stories, but most of it is either on- or sub-par. The two that I actually liked were the first (of 9) and...I think it's the eighth (the detective story) The last one was just plain wierd, and, as far as I could tell, pointless. If you're a collector, go ahead and buy it, but otherwise just borrow it from someone else cuz it's not actually worth owning. |

I dunnno about that. It does provide some useful backstory to the Matrix, but I think each episode is supposed to be enjoyed in its unique graphical style as well as story and dialogue.
I think it did the job it wanted to extremely well. |

I haven't seen it, so until I do I'm gonna just quote a friend of mine:
Quote: | Okay, just wanted to give a few thoughts with regards to the various shorts in "The Animatrix".
"Final Flight of the Osiris".
It has a lot in common with "Final Fantasy: The Movie", since it's made by the same people and everything. Basically it's impressive technologically, but there really isn't much under the hood. The story isn't really bad, there just isn't anywhere near the amount of depth of emotion or ingenuity as what's in the others.
"The Second Renaissance"
Done by the guy who did "Blue Submarine No. 6", don't watch this unless you can handle being depressed for a bit. Dark, sad, and without any happy anywhere (Save for the construction robot taking a "lunch break", I guess. *giggles*) this is one of those stories that has story going for it. It does a lot animation wise, but it's main thing is telling a sad and all-too-likely tale (With numerous references to real-life events.). Missed having a plot in the second live-action film? Look here.
"Kid's Story"
Crazy, with animation that you'd expect to find in a super indie-art-house type film, this one's pretty good, too. A bit confusing as well, but still pretty cool. Teen suicide has never been so interesting.
"Program"
You want action? Here it is. 'nuff said. *chuckles* Look, this is the dude that made "Ninja Scroll", "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" and all of those others... he knows how to do a cool fight scene or two. *laughs*
"World Record"
My favorite by far. This is one of those "try to win, but lose... but did you?!" stories. Plus it deals with the whole "what is real?" theme of the Matrix stories without all of the pointless and idiotic mumbo-jumbo that the second movie desperately floundered around with. *giggles* I seriously find it amusing that my favorite part of this DVD revolves around an athlete and some walnuts. Be sure to watch the end... it totally kicks ass. *giggles*
"Beyond"
Before I go any furter, allow me to tell you who wrote and directed this piece.... *picks up a conductors baton and hat, strikes a pose, then begins to wave his arms around in the air* "Doo-doo-do-dddooooooo-de-doo-do... da da da-dan-naaaa-naaaaaaaaa!" Yes, that's right!!! *smirks devilishly* This is the guy who did numerous spots on "Robot Carnival". Hehe.... Anyhow, this film isn't quite as amusing as those, but still, it's good. It deals with the interesting thought of a glitch in the Matrix... and how the typical person might see it. A bit depressing in it's ending, though.
"A Detective Story"
Weeee! The "Cowboy Bebop" director can't hide some of his previous work here, it seems. *chuckles* This is really a very cool short, although I don't like how it ends at all. I understand the story, and the ending does work... it's just... it makes a really quick jump at the end that is devoid of emotion or a struggle of any sort. The fight is just cut off before it can develop at all, and the result is that it's like getting hit by a concrete slab. Trinity should be a little less trigger-happy.
"Matriculated"
I like the concept here... getting the machines to fight with the humans, etc. The only problem is that the way they do that is involving sex and lust. To be honest, I'm already sick of seeing sci-fi mixed with sex. Really sick of it. On top of that I don't really like the style of the art, and the ending is disjointed and it's difficult to piece together what happened. So, yeah... sick of the sex. |
so...uh... there you go! o_o/ |
