NO ONE has seconded FFX?! I'm... ASTOUNDED. I mean, there are SO many people on this board that have said they LOVE that game! Man.... Well, if no one is gonna second that then I'm gonna put up another one (is that legal? I hope so....) I nominate Crono Trigger. Probably the best SNES game I have EVER PLAYED. And one of the best RPGs EVER. PERIOD. There, I've said my peace.

I'd second both Crono Trigger and FFX, but I'm still suprised games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or even Super Mario 64 aren't on this list yet!
Have you people forgotten your gaming roots?! |

While roots are often times the most nostalgic, I find that along with evolution comes improvements. So the games we mention are products of those improvements.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night comes off as a great game that alot of people enjoy, because it combines three great concepts into one game, which transformed the series completely from being somthing unique, to being a conglomeration of things that have worked.
1) The original Castlevania theme with the castle, recognizable enemies, and the continuation of Richter Belmont's story from Dracula X for PC Engine and SNES.
2) Traditional RPG elements including equipable weapons, armor, and accessories. Status ailments also pop up.
3) A lot of gameplay from the Metroid series, M3 especially. You've got the map that expands as you explore, the save rooms, boss rooms, the nonlinear design, the relics which act a lot like the suit upgrades, HP upgrades as compared to energy tanks, etc.
---
But aanyways.
Yeah, Rev, personally I wouldn't consider Mario 64 "roots." Maybe for the generic 3d platformer, but roots for the Mario series (and the more enjoyable games in the series) are definately the games from NES days.
And each person's got their own roots, in various series.
I know Sperrit's roots are probably found in FFIV, though I can't really speak for him~
My roots come from the original Metroid on NES, and my lack of skill to play it. But I've been determined ever since to defeat it. Once I unlock it on the GCN, that will be my next goal. To defeat the very first of my fave series.
And yes, if this weren't just one single game we're talking about, I'd definately nominate the Metroid series in a heartbeat for the best game series ever. Mostly because every single game is an improvement over the previous. Unlike Capcom's sequel syndrome, very significant things have been accomplished in each game that makes it unique and holds its own in gaming history.
But a lot of what makes a game great in my eyes is music, and storyline. And for a single game to accomplish somthing epic without being overdone or overly dramatic is a difficult thing. Translation to english also comes as a hard boundary if the game didn't originate in the US.
And then there is that thing called Gameplay that separates games from being simply movies, or books with pictures.
I realized that while Vagrant Story is an incredible tome of cinematics, music, storyline, and difficult rpg-ish gameplay, there's one game that surpases it and circulates everything around the gameplay; that which makes a game really a game: ICO.
And so I'd like te change my nomination to that lovely little game. Those who have played/experienced it will know what I talk about. |

Point taken Cobbi, and admittingly there are way too many games I want to nominate, but in the end I had to look at myself and say
"Self, what game is it that you always find yourself playing, no matter what form?"
"Well Reverend, I'd say that you know as well as I do that said game would have to be Tetris."
"Self, you're smart you know that?"
"I do Rev, just wish you'd listen to me more often"
"Self, where's the fun in that?" |

I second Tetris. Why? IT"S ADDICTING. And it does it's job well. It's a time eater, and it eats time like NOTHING ELSE. I mean, even my MOTHER got hooked on this game! She played it so much once her hand was cramped for a week! Any game that can do THAT deserves to be in the top ten!

I would second Crono Trigger but only if it is the PSX version...Mainly for the beautiful cut-scenes by the original character designer Akira Toriyama...I love him...I will have his baby one day!
And why didn't my Zelda game make it on the list? EVERYONE loves Zelda! I mean granted the N64 Zelda's were VERY horrible (IMHO) but remember the good ole' days when you swung your sword and things died and puzzles were solved using BASIC equipment and skills? Not when you had to go from one town pick up some POS and drag it like 80 miles to the other town? ~sniffle~ I miss the Zelda days of old. |

And because I'm somewhat more selective in my posting, I suddenly lose any sort of value in my nomination? |

I still think you are incredibly important Cobbi! I second your nominations of ICO whole heartedly! That game was simply amazing, and damn that we got screwed out of the translation that comes at the end of the game!
And as for Zelda games, I'd say either Link to the Past, or Ocarina of Time ought to be on there. Personally I prefer Ocarina, but that is just me |
