Hey Thanks everyone. It was fun. I will be doing it again when I move to Advanced Blue. But now that I am into the Intermediate belts, it takes twice the time to move up. So it may be about 3 months before something like this is posted again. Next time it will be video though.
Also found out that they want me to do the "Instructor Training Program." Very cool stuff.. I'm very excited. I'll get to work with all the kids and stuff... it will be fun.

What people have said is true, if you do it the wrong way, it can hurt. The important thing is not to attack the board, but attack behind the board. What I do, is the person holding the board, I am for their chest. Kicks are easy to break a board with b/c your legs are so much stronger. A jab is a difficult technique to break a board with b/c it is all arm and the distance your hand goes is very short. The High punch however is a lot easier since it's your back hand and you pivot into it. Your whole body is behind it. Do the technique right, and do it through the board, and you don't feel a thing.
Next time I'm going to do a combination of 3-5 techniques, all of them breaking something. Then I'm thinking of doing some unsupported breaks (someone just holds the board with 2 fingers and it just dangles there) which are harder. I'm also thinking of doing a stronger technique through multiple boards.

I have one major suggestion for you. All martial art forms teach basically the same thing, self defence and self disapline. Just make sure that the self defence part is balanced. Make sure you pick a form that uses the hands and feet about the same amount.
My Dojo used to be a Tae Kwon Do school before, and whenever I fight someone from the old school, they always do nothing but kicks. Very few hand techniques. Kicks are by nature slower then punches. Because of this, the majority of the time, when they try to kick me, I can move in and jam them and throw 2 hand techniques before they even have a chance to recover.
It's important to mix things up. That is why I chose American style karate. It's a good balance. And they also teach you self defence in many advanced situations of being attacked... like choking and head locks, etc.
It's good stuff.
Feel free to ask me anything else. I love talking about martial arts. |
