yes, brave new world and 1984 were satirical in nature, sort of poking fun at the way they thought the world would end up, with humans worshipping technology and ultimately techonology causing a downfall of sorts where people couldnt live without the things provided for them and yadda yadda yadda. The Matrix is based largely upon the what would happen after the worlds of these books, that being technology took us over. sort of funny these books were written in 1948 (1984) and 1920 or 30 something (brave new world) and today the almost seem true. god. what have we come to?

Uhm... You mean where everybody is the same (cloned) and only the top echelon were allowed to develop fully in vitro? *shudder* Where the very elements (like oxygen, nutrients, etc.) were withheld from the "lower class" embryos in order to decrease their mental faculties so they wouldn't think enough to rebel? and if they did, they would be too stupid to formulate a successful rebellion? or how about the total destruction of native emotions or "negative" emotions through emotion altering chemicals so everyone would have "socially acceptable" emotions? True, most were numb and didn't feel they were being short-changed and everyone's creature comforts/ base needs were taken care of, but it's like having your body wrapped in cotton fluffs, ears stuffed with silence, tongue numbed with bland foods, and your insides removed and replaced with unfeeling machinery- essentially, no highs or lows, just an eternal numb. Sad

Utopia... a term that I'm taking a whole class in. A lot of the utopian ideals do tend toward apearing to take away the individual's chaotic nature and regimenting them into predefined patterns. However, I think we tend towards dystopia more than utopia.

Or kinda like the book, The Giver, where nobody could see colors and their jobs were decided for them. That was a weird book.

Strangely enough, that book came up in the first lecture where the instructor wanted to know if we had read any utopian literature...

the giver wasnt as good as the other two IMHO. 1984 was probably the best of them, it was just so sickeningly scary how the people were treated, their own children turned on them. whats scary is that we arent far from orwell's truth.
