This is seriously the year for obscure gaming news that you never thought would happen.. here's another for you guys:

The two biggest names in RPGs will be under one roof as of April 1, 2003. Multiple reports from Japan indicate that Square and Enix will merge next year to form one company, Square Enix Inc., with Enix having "absorbed" Square. If the date makes you skeptical, the merger is scheduled for April 1 to take effect at the beginning of the fiscal year.

Details remain unclear at this time, including the structure of the combined company and how Sony's minority stake in Square would affect the new partnership. Square stockholders will receive .81 shares in the new venture for every current share they own, while Enix holders will get a 1-for-1 trade.

"In the ever-changing world of entertainment software, the most important issue facing companies today is how quickly they can grow as the marketplace and opportunities for business expand and diversify," said an official statement from Enix.

"Enix and Square's response to this issue is the merger announced today. Together, we aim to become producer of the highest-quality digital content in the world."

The new company has released early profit projections and will be headed by current Square president Yoichi Wada. A press conference will be held today to provide additional details.

Whoa! That's something I sure as heck never expected to hear, especially since the two companies, despite both being RPG companies, make very different games from each other. The only thing that makes me a bit skeptical or confused is that Enix is absorbing Square. I mean, Square has the Final Fantasy series, and I haven't really heard from Enix for a long time. It sounds a bit backwards.

But anyway, hopefully we'll see some Enix ingenuity mixed with some Square imagination and get some great games out of it.

Enix is, from what I've heard recently, the top RPG house with their Dragon Quest/Warrior series on zee j-islands actually. Also, currently Japan's top two most wanted games are Enix's Star Ocean 3, and Square's Final Fantasy X-2.

So basically Squinix is gonna make some mad mad money.

And also, somthing tells me that it's a tad less of Enix absorbing, seeing as Square comes first in the company's name, as well as Square's president becoming the president of the newly formed thang.

And, yeah, I can't wait to see what the new RPG Monopoly (cause you know it's as good as one) comes out with once the merger takes place. Will it change the face of such games as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest? Will the games that we know and love be forever changed? And if so will it be for the better... or the worse? Just cause these guys rock on their own doesn't mean that they will rock together....

Yeah, the more I think about it, though, the more that I worry. Will there still be FFs and DQ/W when this is all done? And if so WILL they be the same? I don't know. Of course, the potential counterbalance to that would be that there's the strong possibility that there will be new AWSOME games! Or, that FF and DQ/W will be changed for the better and that we will have a new, better feel to these classic titles. I don't know. Either one's a possibility.

Square is now no longer bankrupt thanx to FF Spirits Within. (Yes, this movie SEVERELY crippled Square due to its HUGE production cost and little or no response from the populous, I kinda liked it myself but not enough people did) Also, like everyone already posted, DRAGON WARRIOR/Quest! YEAH! Toriyama already did art for Crono Trigger and is lead for the Dragon Warrior/Quest series! VIVA LA CREATOR OF DB, DBZ, DR. SLUMP, and some others that I can't think of cause I have just wetted myself with the sheer delight.....
~realizes the true beauty of Star Ocean 3 with the Star Ocean 2 fighting system and the art of Toriyama and the expansive story of Square~......~goes into convulsions~

PS> Star Ocean the Second Star Story is my all time favorite RPG. Some don't like it but I loved EVERY minute of that bad bitch....Especially Iron Chef.
