Fellow PO I have most distressing news to lay unto you. The newest in the Yugioh series on the GBA is total crap. It is the saddest piece of silicon ever to leave the factory. Considering that this is the fifth or so installment of the series and they removed virtually everything that gave the games any flavor it's incredible to see how poorly it turned out.
First, there's the total lack of a story. Yes, you start the game and simply get a menu of who you'd like to face. That's it. You start with 5 characters unlocked abd open up others as you play. That pretty much sums up the game. Now the worst offense is the piss poor programming. The game is *supposed* to follow the rules closer than any previous enstallment but honestly, I didn't play long enough to find out. Here's what kept me from doing so:
Incredible cheapness: following Yugioh rules you have some cards that have limitations as to how many you can have in a deck. Either one, two, or three copies however the computer suffers no such limitations. Not one of the CPU opponents is limited so while you're just starting off with your crappy starter deck, the cpu is able to run roughshod with cards that you are not allowed to have. Now to be fair, the option to unlock the limits was available in past games but you had to earn it. To assume that EVERY computer opponent has already earned that is ridiculous.
Moronic AI: This was the straw, folks. I had read how the cpu refuses to use some cards but this is an actual play that happened in my last game before I decided it was enough. The cpu had a 2000+ atk strength creature out. It played a point boost card (a mask, I forget which one) to bring it's total to 2900 atk. I had one monster out in defense mode with a 1200 def. The cpu then played sacrificed it's monster (2900 atk total) to summon a 2200 pt one with no effects THEN played Black Hole and wiped the board clean, killing it's own monster as well. It then played Swords of Revealing Light to prevent me from attacking it. As if that didn't have me in shock enough, the next turn it played Monster Reborn and brought back the 2200 monster BUT PLACED IT IN DEFENSE MODE!!! and ended it's turn without attacking. I had a facedown monster in defense mode but still. How stupid can you get?
I can go on about the things you'll see but that was enough for me. I paid $10 on EBay for the game and still felt robbed. Thankfully EBGames gave me $12 for it. Do yourself a favor and go with Sacred Cards or even WWE if you need a portable Yugioh fix. Hell, even the console versions (whihc have very little to do with the card game rules) are better. What Konami was thinking is beyond me but let my pain be your warning. |
