Hmm, my friend just told me about another place... . They're also a local shop and actually would be a faster drive than Gim.. though Gim looks to be marginally less expensive. Anyone have any feedback on these guys?

Ok, time for an update...posted from my NEW computer ^_^.

After much discussion, debate, and weighing of options, I actually decided to build my own computer with some help from a friend. It actually turned out the be the best choice and cheapest price. Currently I'm running on the following:

ASUS P4C800 E-Deluxe Motherboard
Intel P4 3.0 Ghz 800Mhz FSB 512MB L2 Cache Processor
1.0 GB Centon PC 3200 DDR-SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9600 256MB Video Card
200 GB Wester Digital SATA Hard Drive
16X Lite-On DVD-ROM
8X Lite-On DVD+/-RW
480W Power Supply
Chenming Black Entry-Level Server Case shown here.

Its running like a dream so far. I have Windows XP Pro installed and will be installing Redhat Fedora 2 within the next week. I bought all my parts from Newegg, Circuit City, and Prime Computers. Newegg is an excellent site... cheap prices and extremely fast shipping, not to mention a lifetime reseller rating of 9.72/10. My order was processed and shipped out same day. Would've gotten here early but I had to wait over the weekend. Circuit City just happened to have some awesome mail-in rebates. I got 2 512 MB DDR sticks from them for $110. Prime Computers a local shop that had some decent prices, albeit not as good as Newegg, but I didn't want to risk having some of the more fragile parts broken in shipping and having to return ship them. Also mounted my old hard drive in the new system and transferred everything over. I'm going to install Redhat 7.3 on my old computer. Anyway, just thought I"d give you guys an update after all the great advice. Thanks again for all the information!!

Good job, I was gonna suggest that getting the parts and doing it yourself might make you happiest. I'm rebuilding mine now too, mostly moving my old pieces into a new case/motherboard. I too stick with Lite-On. They've never screwed me so they got my trust...plus I got the 8x dvd+/- burner for $85 complete with shipping. Surprised

Sounds like you hit the jackpot there. Congrats.

BTW, www.bananapc.com and www.PCRightNow.com are two other good mail order spots. That's where I got my burner from (BananaPC).

I agree. Its really nice knowing in-depth about exactly what is in my system and what its capable of. I tried upgrading the RAM in my old Compaq one time and never could get it to take, even though I was using the kind that was supposed to be for my PC. On the other hand, the build process on this wasn't too bad, only had one or two minor setbacks, mostly involving confusing instructions and a bad cable on the SATA hard drive. Other than that, couldn't have gone more smoothly.

Thanks man, it certainly seems that way. The jump from a Compaq Celeron 500 w/ 64MB SDRAM to this machine is a world of difference. Amazingly, I think I spent -less- building this computer than I did the old one. The final cost was about $1050 or so. I couldn't be happier...

Unless... it was hooked up and cabled like that system in Yuri's link. Holy heck! That's ridiculous man!!! I love it! Where can I order one? XD JK
