So what is up with the carbo craze that’s going on these days? It seems like every body and their mom is making low carb foods now. And one thing I have noticed is places pass off food with huge amount of fat and cholesterol, but hey it’s low in carbs so eat up. when did fat and cholesterol become ok? just cause your not eating carbs its ok to wreak your heart?
This is just another example of the quick fixes in America because every one is to damn lazy. Proper exercise will make your immune system better, its better for your heart, and it will make you feel allot better. It’s so stupid.

DAAAAAAAAAAAA

-jumps in and tackles the topic-

Let me tell you what I feel Dr. Atkins. If that is your real name!

Seriously this anti carb thing is just KILLING me. Everybody is like down with carbs when so many things have been proven in the opposing.

1. Carbs make up the brunt of your long term energy stores. It is true that if you don't work off carbs they will bring on extra weight. However, proteins, fats, cholesterols will all do the same in that condition. You need carbs for excercise.

2. I have noticed that for the most part, everyone who tells me about the joys of atkins are...well usually larger! And that's fine! But don't sit here and tell me how great it is.

3. By the way did anyone ever hear the issue that people on Atkins diets tend to gain back more then they lost?

Now there are good things around the non carb world...like south Beach diet and better options like that.

Simply put, we all lose weight in different ways, what works for some won't work for others....all you really have to do is make some simple diet changes and exercise to stay or get in shape.

But ya know what? All you PO's out there....I love every single one of you just as you are...don't ever change...unless your getting me rice and noodles...cuz that's a nice change Smile

Love ya'll

Excel the Carbinator

I totally agree with Excel, but I have to admit I was sucked into the carb craze. *hangs head in shame* It did help me lose a little weight, but I had to give up good food! I didn't realize how bad it was for me until I took a nutrition class at school and learned that everyone needs to eat carbs, good carbs and once in a while bad carbs are ok too. The most important part of a person's health is healthy eating and exercise. Too many people these days in America are too damn lazy. We have easy no work needed solutions. It's ridiculous, no one wants to do hard work any more!!! Frankly it pisses me off!!!!! We are an obese nation and that's just sad!!! Sad

The 'low carb' idea is pretty stupid. I mean, if you really think about all the fat and cholestorhol that you're taking in I wouldn't be surprized if these people have heart attacks before they're 40. The thing is, the basis of this diet comes from weight-lifters. Weight-lifters eat tons of protein to build up their muscles and stay away from carbs because they don't do long-lasting aerobic exercise. However, they do do a lot of hard, grueling workouts, which means that they are burning all the calories that their eating. They're also a LOT better about their diet and know how to eat. Atkins is a stupid generalization of that idea taken out of context. Maybe you'll lose weight in the short term, but it's not healthy. Not at all.

Well I gotta say from personal experience (and being able to watch Shino's progress first hand) I don't mind doing this whole "low carb" thing. I've lost 7 lbs so far and I'm still working on it. It's a lot of veggies and low fat/no fried style of foods. I've dropped soda to the absolute bare minimum (I occassionally partake in a diet coke w/ lime - but that is RARE). It's been more water for than anything. I've gotten the point where it ruins the taste of my food if I have anything other than water to drink with my meal. Really it's all about dropping the fast food (which we can ALL live without) and dropping a lot of the fatty foods. I agree some carbs are good to have and I am in no way an anti-carb Nazi. But I also have come across new and interesting combos of foods that just taste delicious and aren't saturated with fat and cholesterol. I also am working on a stable gym routine and have invested in better pads for my DDR so I can do fun cardio at home. I am currently on the South Beach diet and as Phase 1 was really tough to get through (absolutely no potatoes, no bread, no rice, no pasta - oh that one is the worst!) I made it and found out I really didn't miss it so much. I moved on to Phase 2 which has some more lenient guidelines and actually Shino and I are jetting back to Phase 1 together for 5 weeks instead of the initial 2. I won't deprive my body of the things it needs. I'm just looking at it from a healthier point of view. (as in no McD's, no pizza, no "fast and easy food selections") I may not have all the time in the world but I've found I've had to make it in order to become healthier.

For anyone out there who doesn't want to subscribe to the carb-craze, I highly suggest picking up a book called Eat, Drink and Be Healthy. It doesn't say "No Carbs!" but it does rebuild the severely flawed Food Pyramid we all know.

I gave up rice around when I was 5 and found it tasted like ass....True story. I like things made with rice but seriously detest steamed (Sticky) rice and Chicken Soup with rice...Fried rice and rice with an ass load of things like Kung-pow Chicken or Mongolian Beef is tasty...Just could never eat the stuff on its own or with little to no meats.

Same with pasta..I need sauces and meats or veggies...So basically if I can eat it without rice or pasta then you can add rice or pasta and I'll be fine.

And I myself have succumbed to the low carb diet and have lost about 25 pounds...But Doot and Shino tend to leave me out of their diet discussions because they hate me because I lack no talent or skills but am an integral part in PO...Basically I'm a gopher...That's about it. And my diet is harder cause I eat less than they do because I have will power...Unless there's junk food then I have no will power which is why there is no junk foods in my homestead I share with Shino...And every night when he tosses my body into the basement so I can cry myself to sleep in the dank dark area till he lets me out in the morning all I have to eat is what I catch and rats are hard to catch.

I hate to be the voice of dissent here, but I must be...

I did the whole low carb thing back in senior year of high school, which was over 3 years ago, and was before the whole low carb craze kicked in. I did Atkins, and Godbless the man, because his diet really did work for me. At the time, my friend's mom was a nutritionist, and she explained that the diet actually was ok. In a period of a couple of months I had not only lost 20 lbs, but I found that I had more energy, could pay attention in class better, slept better, and felt better overall. Unfortunately I could not keep the commitment forever, college happened, and it became harder and harder to follow the diet. But my experience with it was definitely positive.

The problem, however, is that since it worked so well initially, it became a fad, and fads often ruin things. People believe that by not eating carbs pounds are going to fly off, and that Atkins' diet says you can eat whatever you want as long as they're not carbs. Both statements are incorrect. Atkins doesn't tell you to stop eating carbs. He tells you to lower your carb count to about 20grams for the first two weeks, then to slightly increase it each week after that. Once you stop losing weight, thats your level (or something like that), and as long as you maintain that level, you shouldn't gain any weight. That level could be 100 grams per day, it all depends on your body. Also, he doesn't say to go out and binge on fatty foods. He actually says that if you find yourself not losing weight from the cutting of carbs, its probably because you're eating too much fat, and you should decrease your CALORIC intake. Atkins also says that during this process, you should be exercising.

Also, if you look at it, the diet makes sense scientifically as well. Your body burns throuh its carbohydrates before it burns your fat, and unused carbs will eventually become fat. By eliminating the carbs, your body goes into Ketosis, which is the state of buring just fat. This explains my increase in energy, because if I remember correctly from science class, fat gives you the best and most energy when burned.

At any rate, the problem is that the fad nature that these things have taken on has cause a gross perversion of the way they are really supposed to be. As a result, people complain and have bad experiences with things. I, too, am annoyed at all the low carb nonsense thats going around today, but only because its become a commercial bastardization of what it really is.

~Ming
