Ok, first of all this has nothing to do with X-Box.
It's a free X86 Emulator. Within 15 minutes of discovering the site, I was playing One Must Fall 2097 like it was 1992.
Explanation:
This is a program called DOSBox ver .6 something. I take it this means it's not finished yet, but man it works REALLY WELL!
It emulates a 286 - 486 computer with DOS on it. This means that you can play all those older games that don't work on current Windows operating systems!
The typical problem is, you want to play an old game, but it doesn't work, usually because it's programming is so old, it tries to access the hardware directly, and Windows protects against this.
You guys should really check into this; it ROCKS! There are sooooo many old games that I can't wait to try with this, and there's a forum where you can look for answers; because some games require some tweaking in DOSBox to get them running; but it's really quite minimal!
Worms 1
Ultima Domain (Genesia)
One Must Fall: 2097
Old Sierra Games (King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Sam N Max)
Old LucasArts Games (MONKEY ISLAND! DAY OF THE TENTACLE!)
Ultima Series
Elder Scrolls 1 & 2
Sure, some of these might still work on your computer, but I bet not all of them! That's just the beginning. This can emulate several types of hardware, such as a Tandy, IBM, etc... and several types of soundcards, etc. So it can run really old stuff, or from what I've heard, you can run anything up to Windows 95 on it, so it REALLY bridges the gap between the oldest of old games and those games that used to work with older versions of windows but don't anymore. I really jumped out of my socks when I found this jewel. Oh happy day.

if I can download it I can find out for you. I hear it can play just about ANYTHING, given a bit of patience in some cases.
For example, with Ultimate Domain, I'm having problems getting it to install, because I think it expects a FAT32 partition, and my entire HD is NTFS (the format WIN XP uses). I haven't seen anything yet on easy work-arounds, so if I have to, I'll buy an extra hard drive or I'll reformat my computer and partition it... which is the only way to get a FAT32 partition if you've already used the whole HD for XP. |

Hmm. Interesting. I haven't had too many problems with programs not running on my XP box in DOS mode, I just needed a program that would let me hear such things. Because without sound, the game's not half as fun as it could be. So I got that, and all was well. |

so you're using DOsbox and now you have sound?
It's a bit of a balance to get the sound right sometimes; if the sound is skippy, just lower the CPU cycle speed (Control + F11) until it sounds smooth. Control + F12 speeds up the CPU, for games that run too slow. F7 and F8 adjust skip frame, and increasing this allows stuff to run faster while also keeping the sound sounding good... it just makes the animation less fluid. |

Nah. I'm not using that program. I have a different program that took care of my sound problems. The DOSbox thing does look interesting, though. If I need it at some point (like playing old Sierra games), I might download it. |
