The PSP is supposed to be slated as a geek's wish list. It's own proprietary media format (UMD, supposed to have 1.8G on it), mp3 audio and video playback, beyond PS1 gaming capabilities, a nice LCD-type display, Playstation controls, Blue Tooth and/or some sort of infared transmitting system, wireless networking, and (what I'm most excited about) games and videos like Darkstalkers (yes, the original), Gran Turismo, Metal Gear, and Advent Children.

On the other hand, the Nintendo DS has got two screens, and games like Metriod: Hunters seem to make use of it as a screen that contains the map, so that you become more focused on the game. It's going have a few new games as well as a bunch of old favorites: Mario, Wario Ware, and Animal Crossing. But there's not much to the DS outside of gaming.

Nintendo's always dominated handhelds. Sega found that out, and so did countless unhappy people at Tiger Electronics. Will Sony's step up to the fast pitch of Nintendo, mean an immediate strike out, or do you think Sony might be hittin' this one out?

im gonna say the psp...cause i love PS1 games, and i love music, and love all of that stuff that you mentioned...so its going to be multipurposeful...and make me very happy.

Whilst DS is going to get some really cool games...its just for games, and thats it. I would rather have something that had MANY different abilities and programs than just additional games i have to buy

*is done ranting*

Point number one: Metroid: Hunters blows. Any game where you actually have to tap the screen with the stylus to fire blows.

Point number two: I haven't seen a game on the list of previews for the DS which seems to make good use of the second screen. I mean, a map is all well and good, but how creative is that?

Point number three: Wireless Networking. Absolutely the greatest invention in multiplayer gaming since sliced bread.

Final verdict: I won't be getting either one, because I don't deal in handhelds anyway ^_^

I think I know who's going to be backing first week sales of the PSP: Final Fantasy fanboys/girls...Advent Children is being released on the PSP on it's UMD format disc and DVD simulteanously. I can't say that won't influence my purchase, but I'd spend more time playing Darkstalkers and Metal Gear Acid, personally.

That is all

...I don't remember the PSP being back-compatible. Doesn't it use the same minidiscs that the GC uses?

...backward compatible with what!? Isn't that a disc-based system as well?

I think by backwards compatibility, people are thinking of the fact that it's a gaming console capable of slightly better than the PS1 was capable of. Unless they port the PS1 classics onto the UMD format, you'll not be playing FF-anything on it. It's way too small for a CD. The UMD discs are going to be about the size of the circle you can make with you index finger and your thumb. Plus, it's more like a cartridge with a disc inside. It just sits in the little casing and spins.

And I do believe that I read that the DS is backwards-compatible with the GBA style carts. I distinctly remember reading and hearing that.
