She had had the most beautiful fiery red hair, he thought, laying back and staring up at the drab ceiling. Almost as if the powers that were had created her hair to reflect her personality, to shine almost as brightly as she herself. Such beautiful hair…
His eyes hardened. He must not make a mistake like that again. For those few seconds, he had lost his control, and the dark one had emerged, just as he had five weeks ago. The dark one, like the weakling, must be kept under lock and key, lest he betray him. This was easy with the one, but with the other, not so easy. The dark one, lacking the fear and self-hatred possessed by the weakling, was nearly as strong as he himself. Not quite strong enough to achieve domination, but formidable enough to be able to force himself into the open, given certain triggers. Triggers…like her.
She had had such wonderful hair, he thought.

Who was Jonathan Davies? And what was his connection to Janus Bostrom? The psychologist pondered these things. The man had said that John Davies had killed his wife. But who was his wife? He didn’t know. And neither did the State of New York, it seemed. He paused to rub his eyes, itching from the harsh computer light. Then he froze. His hands fell slowly to his lap as another name popped into his head.
-\\-
“Last week, you told me John Davies killed his wife.”
Janus entered the room and sat down at the desk, looking at the psychologist warily. “Yes?”
Wolfe stood with his back to the wall just to the right of the window. “What was her name?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Oh, no, I really think it does, Mister Bostrom.”
“It has no bearing on you, or I, or anything we have talked about.”
“I think I can hazard a guess, don’t you?”
“No.”
“Her name is-“
Janus exploded from his chair, launching himself straight over the desk. The moment his chained feet hit the ground, he lunged forward, slamming Wolfe against the wall with both hands around the psychologist’s neck. His face was hellish red, his eyes wild and manic, and the tendons in his neck stood out while spittle flew from his mouth as he screamed at the top of his lungs, “I TOLD YOU NEVER TO SPEAK OF HER!” His grip tightened like a vise, muscular hands crushing the other man’s throat the way they would a block of cheese, cutting off air, speech, and life, turning Wolfe’s vision spotty and black. Suddenly, Janus was jerked backwards by the two burly guards. His eyes bored hatred into the psychologist as he was dragged backwards towards the door.
Wait! WAIT! “Wait…” It was a low croak, but it was enough. The guards paused, and one of them looked back questioningly. Wolfe’s eyes never left those of his charge as he spoke to them hoarsely from his position, leaning against the wall, hands on his knees, taking deep gulps of air between his words. “Wait. Don’t…take him…back…yet. Just…keep him…restrained.” The guards looked at eachother with raised eyebrows, and the first one looked at Wolfe as though he had gone mad. Perhaps he had, he thought. But they had their orders.
“Whatever you say, Doc.” Said the first one with a little shrug.
The psychologist panted, coming slowly to his feet as his breath returned, but still leaning against the wall.
Janus resisted. “No. Let me go, Doctor. Let me go! Don’t do this. I’ll kill them, Doctor, and then I’ll kill you. I’ll kill your wife, I’ll kill your daughter, I’ll kill your daughter’s unborn child, and then I’ll make you suffer the worst agony you can imagine! You don’t want to do this, Doctor!”
Wolfe forced himself to ignore the man. Slowly, he regained his strength, and took a step forward. Then another. With infinite care and patience, he approached as close as he could safely remain to the man between the guards. He looked right into the man’s eyes, and spoke softly, almost kindly. “Did you kill her, John?”
Janus stiffened, fighting mightily the emotions that rose within himself, the forces, the feelings that he hadn’t felt in over twenty years. A moment of shock and epiphany. An eternity of pain and torment. Finally, John Davies collapsed between the guards, remaining upright only because of their strong hands on his arms. His own hands covered his face as he broke down and wept, sobbed, screamed with the pain that blasted through his mind. Wolfe watched impassively, marveling to himself at the amazing intricacies of the human mind as a stone cold killer, an emotionless rock in the pool of humanity, cried openly before him. The seconds stretched out interminably, seeming to last forever before the man finally began to pull himself together. He stood on his own two feet again, but there was something about him that made him seem smaller. A man who had been humbled, totally cowed by the life he had been forced to endure. He was the best and worst of humanity at the same time; succumbing to the ravages of life to in turn become a ravager of life, while surviving beyond the point where the pain he felt should have drowned him completely. Finally, he regained his composure.
“Yes,” he whispered, a sound which would have been inaudible, but for the utter silence which flooded the room.
Wolfe stepped forward, knelt, and looked up into his patient’s eyes, his own eyes reflecting some parts pity, even a small bit of admiration for one who had survived such unbearable trauma, but mostly they held an infinite depth of caring and kindness. “Would you like to tell me about it?”
