Cool! I'll try getting there 3 days before AWA11 as well.

Now, on with the topic.

Sparing with Shino allowed me to try a new way of sparring. Since nearly ALL the sparring I've done in the past was judo sparring, it was kinda ackward at first to try focus on NOT throwing/counter-throw. I was wondering if either in karate or kenshou, falling techniques were thought since in judo, before starting to learn any moves, we learn how to fall without hurting ourself. Considering that all the sparring is focused around trowing and, mostly, falling, it's natural they teach us that as soon as we start. But see, I really enjoy this "no-throws allowed" method of sparring but I thought, wouldn't it help everyone become better at what they do if certain rules were bent just a lil ... or a lot ^^;;

Basicly, Shino, I'd like to spare with you outside that karate dojo, so I could train on the trows and counters I would have like to do. But know that I can't allow myself to do such moves if in the first place it isn't safe for me to do them on you, in other words, if you have yet to know how to appropriatly fall (if that's the case, I could teach you).

It is true that learning basics of a said art will allow you to be prepared for advanced techniques. I consider that, once you become a black belt, no matter what art you practice, it's only at THAT point that you can say you start to learn and be an enlighten student. Yes, first black belt rank is considered as Master or teacher sometimes but ... you are just teacher or master of the basic techniques. There is a saying in Tae kwon do: "One white belt out of 1000 will get a black belt; one black belt out of 1000 will get to there second degree black belt" ... or something like that, anyway, point is, once you get a black belt, it should be considered as the true begining! I gave up the attempt of mastering all basics of judo, or any other forms of arts since, I didn't find a single art yet that would include nothing but moves that are fit for me, fit for my body, my soul, my heart .... myself.

So instead, I got to look for many different ways, many different philosophies, many different approches, and seek the ones that fit me best. Self-thought most of the moves, stances, addapted moves that already existed, addopted ways that I beleived to be the ones made for me. In the end, I realise that, no matter in what dojo I'll enter ... I'll always be stuck to go against that way I've been working on so hard to fallow, go against my way to fit in the rules ... I can deal with that, afterall, it is I that decided to fallow such way, and I knew in the first place I wouldn't have many opportunities to get a chance to train it with others. I am greatful to be allowed in dojos and practice with others and will always be ready to do all I can to obey the dojo and sparring rules.

See, I think that someone can get better at something not only by confronting similar situations, in similar enviroment. Exemple, in judo, you try to get close to the person you fight, close enough to grab that person, break an arm or just throw it down on the ground. In Karate, you want to attack, keep the opponent away, get back at him, and so on (I know it's not all about that, but you know, part of it is) And what I would think be a good way to spar for, let say, a karateka and a judoka, would be to allow them both to do what they are good at against each others, allowing them to see how efficient they can be against a different type of opponent, in a different enviroment.

Ok that was a bit long, hmm, I'll stop for now and see what you guys think!

I study Soo Bahk Do at an academy near my house. I just started at the end of July, and let me tell you, Soo Bahk Do is a very slowly advancing art. I am going for my Orange Belt in about 2 weeks, and then I think sometime this Winter I will test for my Green Belt.. Only 5 belts plus the Master's belt (for Members of 15+ years..)

Excel-Nidan! Shino-sama and I are planning to have training sessions every so often once we get the tapes, too ^_^ Although I think the first few will mostly involve him helping me re-learn all the basics.

Im learning Capoeira, i like it because its very fluid and free form, but it requires a lot of strength and flexability, which i am still building up. I would like to learn some other styles to supplement it though such as 8 immortals wushu (aka drunken) but the only place i found that teaches it is in california. I am thinking about taking some aikido and kenpo classes as a school just opened up in my little hillbilly town but i have yet to check it out. Though if you would care to enlighten me about Judo BWS i would really like to know what it is all about.

In reply to Shinigami:

Judo ... ''The Way of Yielding" roughly translated ... or, as I like to call it (and it is also one of the way to call it), "The Way of using your opponent's strength against him" It's a bit long, but it pretty much tells you what judo is about.

Kodokan Judo is the pillar of my form of MA, I see it as a "Water-Elemental" art that is the most representative of its element. We are thought to "be like water" in judo. To slip trough your opponents hands, to absorb his attacks, and neutralize them ... to get to dominate your opponent by using nothing but his own strength/weigth ... and eventually be for your opponent the sea in which he will drown.

If one does nothing but judo, he will have trouble in street-fight situations including more then one opponents at the time, but if one learns more forms of fighting, judo can become very handy since he will know how to keep his stamina high while moving around/throwing/attacking his opponents.

The term "judo" alone existed before Jigoro Kano introduced his way back in 1909 when it was first recongnize as an official foundation. But Kano was the first to merge American street-fighting techniques to an oriental MA (jujitsu)

Kodokan judo is a derived form of jujitsu. I HIGHLY recommend you the fallowing links:

http://www.judoinfo.com/kano.htm

http://www.judoinfo.com/kano5.htm
http://www.judoinfo.com/kano6.htm
http://www.judoinfo.com/kano7.htm

I have read them entirely and I can tell you those are some of the best references I can give you in order to learn about kodokan judo and Jigoro Kano's life, a man I would have wished to be able to meet.

"When I die, Kodokan Judo will not die with me because all things can be studied if these principles (best use of energy and mutual prosperity) are studied."

~Jigoro Kano

I'm going to assume this topic isn't too horribly dead, and post anyway...

I've been studying the Goju, Shotokan, and Shorei-Ryu forms of karate for about five years now. I've also been studying Muay Thai for the last two years, and Krav Maga(Israeli martial arts) for the last year. BWS, I'd certainly be interested in sparring with you sometime... having never faced someone who uses Judo, it would be one hell of a learning experience. Laughing Shino seems like he'd be fun to get whomped by too.

I want to start Krav Maga too! I'm sure I'll like it, I expect it to merge with my form as easely as russian martial arts have in the past. hmmm, the idea of defending myself against an opponent with a knife and learning disarming techniques for not only that but handguns, assault rifles, and even grenades ... I almost wet my pants just to think about it XD

I know that I'll get a chance to have such training once I save enough money to pay myself training sessions at the I.S.S. in Israel. But I must say I would really like to have a taste of it before that happens!

This topic really teases me ... so many different styles ... so far away ... gah, we must all meet up and fight all night long! Learn from each others' style, observe every moves, and talk about that night alone for a week ha! That would be great.

O and it is fun to get wooped by Shino! I've got to taste a few of his specialties, and man, they taste good! ...

'' Hmmm, tastes like blood ... hey isn't that a piece of your finger, Chris? Oops ^^; ''
