Hands Remade

I can't stare for too long
Five spots and a wrinkle
Is my lifeline too short?
A scar between knuckles is
a gateway

I am greeted by an explosion of sawdust
Fireworks set in time to the symphony of spinning metal
A mind distracted, thinking beyond the cedar into a world
beyond pain
beyond reality
beyond time itself as
time itself winds around
and back
and under
through blades
through children's laughter
through wooden horses galloping in amber fields
through every single speck of dust in the air until
I find myself staring too long
at the back of my eyelids
Marbleized red and green
I think of Christmas

Later on, painting a crystalline finish with a hand in gauze
Completion
Punctuating each side with a small black eye

I remember the excited shouts as the veil of sleep
ascended from the house
The thumping up the steps
the tug of my arm
the hushed voice against my ear
"Santa came"

Warm coffee and the rhythmic motion
of an arc against wooden floors
as he rocks
and rocks
and rocks
and I find myself staring too long
So I glance at these hands
remade
yet still the same


Something I felt like writing today. Not my perspective, of course. Reading it out loud helps.
