What do you do if someone steals your identity. What steps do you take to getting your life back to normal? How would you go on after your life has been ruined. Ayone know someone that this happen to or had it happen to them. Just a thought that poped in my head and kinda freaked me out.
So enjoy the rest of your day.

well, if far-gone enough, i'd say you're pretty screwed, and its your own fault if it happens.

My opinion (I have no stated claims or info on this) is that people's own errors are the reason why these things happen. You need to be careful with what you put your Social security number on, as well as any number. I know im pretty crazy when it comes to the FAFSA information, since it requires lots of info i'd rather not be giving out.

Just remember...don't be dumb with your identity, and no one can steal it.

That is all

Identity theft is easier to accomplish than you think, Tobs. Purchasing online can result in a form ID theft. I have what's called a cochlear implant and have to special order my batteries so that I'm not stuck with enegizers or duracels that only last a few hours. Someone hacked the companies computer and was able to get to all the credit card information. Who knows what they're buying and with who's credit card.

In a case like this, you'd cancel the credit card (and change any accounts that the card was attached to). Credit card companies are usually pretty good about working with you to protect your credit. Mostly because they want to make sure they're not losing their money as well.

Your SSN is a completely different matter and I'm not sure what to do in a case like that.

Exactly. A minor case of this happened to my father a couple of years ago, and the credit card company was very helpful in remedying the situation. And while I'm not a big fan of credit card companies for other reasons, they have recognized the growing threat of identity theft and have been making great strides in trying to combat it through increased security, and by carefully monitoring accounts for statistically "different" purchases. They understand that identity theft is a problem that hurts both the consumers as well as themselves.

I think this just comes down to being extra careful and aware of what you put your SSN on. I recently filled out an job application online that asked me to put down my SSN as a means of acknowledging that all the information I had given was factual. I did not put my number down, and would have gladly passed the job opportunity up if it had become an issue that they pressed, which they did not.

Getting back to the original question, I think that if someone gets your credit card numbers or bank information, it's as easy as informing your credit card companies and/or bank, who will then take the neccesary actions to remedy the situation. If it goes further than that, I think the best course of action would be to inform the proper authorities that you believe your identity has been stolen. I would say just call the police first, who would then probably be able to direct you to the proper channel for help. In today's day and age with the threat of this on the rise, I am sure that there are special government investigative groups in place to fight this problem.

The short version to this:

Call the bank
Call your Credit card companies
Call Equifax
Call the DMV
If you have a car or a house, call the loan office.
and contact any other group that deals with your financials

It is just a thought because i was looking at a check stub from work and just all the info that was on it. SSN,Hourly wage, they could fill out a pretty accurate credit card app. an screw you over. I was just wondering how you bounce back after that? I know it won't be quick....And how do you find out it happened? HOLY CRAP! Now i freaked myself out more.

I don't know who your employeer is, but Best Buy is pretty good at having only the last 4 digits of your SSN.

Hmmm.
I remember a few years ago someone from my moms office was stealing peoples credit cards. She was using them to buy shoes I think. In the end, it wasnt like everyone noticed right away...and bye the time they found out their credit cards had been stolen serious damage was done. Because, despit the fact that they were stolen and the companies understood that, it still damages your credit, if I'm not mistaken. This of course, was bad for my mom and Im pretty sure she still has some credit issues resulting from the incident.

They did end up figuring out who it was because the woman stealing the cards actually started wearing her purchases to work. Apparently she was older...maybe a little off.
